Four East Village down-and-out derelicts and apparent friends sit on a step and engage in a lively chat. They are smoking and drinking. Street Photographer Mitchell Funk captures them with a late afternoon light and sets them against a colorful green wall with tree shadows that add a pictorial complexity to the image. A blur of blue occupies the lower left quadrant, resulting from a passing car. Funk's soft, colorful palette brings a fresh perspective to a gritty subject Can a street photograph be a grab shot and precisely designed simultaneously? Mitchell Funk says yes. He brings finely honed photography skills such as composition, intense lighting and design to found subject matter. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
